An Instructional Journey along the Magnificent Coast of Skye
By Simon Willis
Exciting and practical sea kayak instruction from one of the world’s top coaches will start beginners on the right track and help intermediate kayakers improve their technique in calm water and rough. Personalized coaching sessions are mixed with a beautifully shot four-day voyage along the west coast of the Isle of Skye.
The coaching sessions guide kayakers from the fundamentals, through forward paddling, turning and steering, and into rough water and tidal races. With magnificent Cuillin mountain views, we explore caves, waterfalls, dramatic sea stacks and 5,000 year old historic sites.
The DVD menu allows the journey to be watched with the coaching sessions appearing exactly as they’re required. Viewers can return to study the coaching sessions, which use freeze frame and slow-motion, to analyze techniques. Gordon says, "I try to coach in the context of a journey, so I wanted the DVD to be the same. If we can take our techniques and turn them into skills by applying them in the right environment, then everything becomes very, very real."
The DVD is shot and edited by sea kayak guidebook author and former BBC videographer Simon Willis for Sunart Media. It was awarded Best Instructional Film for 2010 at both the Reel Paddling Film Festival in Toronto and Paddle Canada's Waterwalker Film Festival events.
